West Point Lake 03-05-2011 Highland Marina

West Point Lake turned out some really good fish for the March 5th tournament anglers. 21 teams braved the wind and rain and most caught good fish during the tournament and in the previous days of pre-fishing.  The spawning fish had pulled back to deeper cover while the really small fish stayed in the shallows.  The approaching cold front and moon phase played a big part.  Spider rigging payed off again over trolling.  Primary points inside the major creeks congregated the better size fish.    The top 5 teams all weighed in over 9.27 lbs and the top 5 big fish were 1.87 lbs + with 4 of them over 2 lbs.  REALLY good to see the youths and female team members again too.

Lake Oconee 02-19-2011 Katy's Korner Store

Lake Oconee turned on just about all over the lake in the last week.  Lick Creek was red hot early on, but by tournament day both of the main arms of the lake and the upper river arms were producing some slabs.  The fish moved shallow and were holding in the warmer 50-53 degree stained water and where even staying in the upper water column out over the channels too.  Speeds of up to 1.4 MPH down to .5 MPH produced and the color really didn't seem to matter as long as it had a minnow!  The top 11 teams all weighed in over 10 lbs and the top 10 big fish were 1.76 lbs + with 4 of them over 2 lbs.  REALLY good to see the youths team members too.

Here are the top 5, Big Fish, and Top Female anglers:

Lake Eufaula 01-08-2011 Lakepoint Marina

Lake Eufaula produced some huge slabs again for the January 8, 2011 tournament proving this fishery to be one of the best in the South.  Even with the gale force winds these tough anglers found the winning fish to bring to the scales.  With water temps running in the upper 40's most folks would have been only pushing minnows, but long line trolling proved to be the method that would catch the bigger fish.  Yes minnows were important, but moving along the channel breaks was better than hovering over structure.  Even with the cold water, crappie will continue to feed on the schools of bait that migrate along the channels waiting on the warmer water.  The kicker this time was the gale force winds that forced a lot of anglers to hunt sheltered areas which were not holding the better fish.  The larger heavier boats were able to hold to the areas they needed to fish even in the 20+ MPH winds endured during pre-fishing and tournament day.

Lake Talquin 12-04-2010 Lake Talquin Lodge

Another great tournament down at Lake Talquin!  A very big Thank You to our hosts Lake Talquin Lodge and to all the anglers.  Cold fronts during the week before and coming in Saturday night made the fishing a little harder than normal.  The water was a normal dark color but clear with temps ranging in the low 50's and the sun was shining bright.  The winds stayed steady a little after sunrise and got up to around 15 mph which makes those Talquin stumps a little harder to see in those waves!  The anglers worked hard finding 7 big ones to weigh.  Most long line trolled slow and DEEP and I am sure those Lightwire Hooks paid off.  The lower end of the lake was a popular area, but there were good fish caught mid lake.  Jigs tipped with minnows or Crappie Nibbles helped convince some of the larger ones to grab the hook.  An assortment of colors worked but Popsicle, Blue Ice, Bubblegum/Chartreuse, Purple Shad, Electric Chicken, and Kentucky Lake Killer were mentioned several times.

Here are the top 5, Big Fish, and Top Female anglers:

  1. 10.96 lbs    Jason Little / Billy Williams
  2. 10.90 lbs    Roy Cape / Robert Harris
  3. 10.61 lbs    Robby Huff / Robert Huff
  4. 10.32 lbs    Ricky Willis / Troy Thiel

Clarks Hill 11-06-2010 Soap Creek Marina

The 1st tournament of the season is in the books.  Clarks Hill on November 6, 2010 was a blast!  The weather tried to interfere with locating those hungry slabs, but these die-hard anglers pulled out all the tricks to bring some big slabs to the scales.  Early winter time with water temps hanging around 60 and slightly stained water made wood structure in the 10-20 foot of water range the preferred target holding the larger crappie.  An assortment of jigs worked, but the common thread was tipping with a minnow.  Pushing (spider-rigging) and slow trolling worked better to keep the bait in the strike zone longer.  Most of the bigger slabs were found farther back in the major creeks than most anglers expected too.

The race for the win was a close one with very little separation between each of the top 5 places and two of the big fish were over 2 lbs.

Here are the top 5, Big Fish, Top Youth, and Top Female anglers:
