Lake Blackshear  -  Cordele, GA

Slab Masters Tournament Trail as a Club Affiliate of Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters Tournament Trail held the 1st tournament of the GA State Championship, a 3 lake series, on January 14, 2012, at Lake Blackshear in Cordele, GA.  Lake sponsors were Cordele – Crisp Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau, Leroy’s One Stop Bait & Tackle, Ramada Inn of Cordele, Tractor Supply of Cordele, Five Star Automotive Group, Jiffy Jigs, Hall’s Taxidermy, Jet Food Stores, Ugly Signs, EZ.T Pole Perch, Dairylane, A&R Jigs, Cape’s Trailers, Knight’s Wildlife Studio, and Moss Back Fish Attractor.

The team of Craig Chapman and Jason Little took the lead in the points race for the Championship by weighing in 11.24 lbs.  They long lined double 1/16th oz. Litewire Hooks jig heads and A&R jigs WAY back to get down to the winning fish holding in the river channel.  Red heads were the common factor for them, but jig colors changed throughout the day.  Covering water helped them find the larger aggressive fish also because they trolled from the dam to the Cedar Creek area and never cranked the big motor until time to weigh-in.  They caught over 70 crappie on tournament day with over 40 exceeding 10”.  They earned $1,400 for 1st place and a good lead going into the next lake of the series at Lake Talquin on February 4, 2012.

Second place with 10.58 lbs. was the husband and wife team of Tommy & Christy Sellers who was also Top Female angler of the tournament.  They used single homemade 1/16th oz. jigs with a #4 split shot about two foot above the jig.  Jigs with orange or pumpkinseed were best throughout the day, and were all tipped with a minnow.  Their large Ranger boat with full fuel tank helped them manage the wind and maintain a speed between .6 and .8 mph.  Their better fish for the day came from deep in the center of the channel.  They earned $700 for 2nd place and some very important points in the race for the Championship.

The Dairylane and Moss Back Fish Attractor team of Ron Wallace and Tim Werkin took 3rd place with 9.92 lbs. and second place big fish at 2.08 lbs.  They also caught over 100 fish on tournament day using Litewire Hooks jig heads in red 1/16th and 3/32nd oz. adding one and sometimes two #4 split shot to stay down deep along the river channel.  Acid Rain and Lake Weiss Killer were their best colors during the tournament using Wally Marshall Crappie poles and reels.  The team also stated their Humminbird electronics with Navionics mapping helped them work the river channel ledges and humps.  They earned $300 and 3rd place points in the Championship race.

The Big Bite Baits and Ocmulgee Timber Company father and son team of Billy & Scott Williams took 4th place with a weight of 9.74 lbs. by spider rigging minnow rigs with B’n’M ProStaff poles and some jig rigs tipped with a minnow on large trash piles along the river ledges.

Fifth place was Steve Harrison & Tony Outlaw with 9.55 lbs., and they also took Big Fish honors with 2.27 lbs.  They spider rigged the river channel with double and single minnow rigs using rosie red minnows.
