Our third regular season tournament was held on September 22, 2012 out of Leroy's One Stop Bait & Tackle and Veterans Memorial State Park in Cordele, GA on Lake Blackshear.  The summer heat had loosened its grip a little and the water temperatures had finally started getting back down below 80.  Pre-fishing had shown some of the crappie were starting their fall patterns.  The lake has stayed at or really close to full pool all summer and was only a slight stain to clear over most of the lake.  Crappie were being caught from the backs of the creeks to main lake channel ledges and way up the river too.  The schools were migrating a long distance each day with the schools of shad making it tough to select an area to start on tournament day.  A few teams found brush piles that were holding fish for several days in a row, but they were far and few between.

The winning method was long line trolling the lower half of the lake making long pulls over stumps and brush piles in 10-20 feet of water.  Craig Chapman and Jason Little used double rigged 1/16 and 3/32 oz Litewirehooks and A&R Jigs plastics in black/blue/chartreuse and blue/chartreuse curly tails.  All their weigh-in fish were white crappie and came from close to the bottom.  Second place caught their fish spiderrigging over select brush piles with double minnow rigs in the same depths and area.  Scott Williams and Billy Williams used baits from A&R jigs, Big Bite, and Crazy Angler Slab Bandits to get their big fish.  Second place also caught the big fish of the day too.  Third place tried plan A, B, C and ended up going to plan D!  Forrest Walker and Jacob Walker caught their best fish jigging brush and shooting docks. As you can see, being versatile is critical.

The mixture of white and black crappie in a cypress lake like Blackshear give you many options that can produce big fish.  The numbers of small fish caught along with the big fish is a pretty good indication of a strong population that should continue for years to come.  Cordele - Crisp County invites you to come see what all Lake Blackshear and the surrounding area has to offer anglers as well as their families.

We would like to say thank you to Cordele - Crisp Count, Leroy's One Stop Bait & Tackle, B'n'M Pole Company, EGO Nets, Jiffy Jigs, EZT Pole Perch, Five Star Automotive Group, Moss Back Fish Attractor for all their help in making this trail possible.
