We had a good time today at the Oconee qualifier tournament. The cold was still lurking and a little wind, but overall the weather was better than the previous couple of weeks. Water temps had not warmed to the normal February temps. Most of the lake was 44 to 52 degrees with the warmest waters usually on the main lake to mid-way up the creeks and rivers. The cold runoff from the recent rains had the shallows unusually colder and the fish were really scattered. Prefishing wasn’t encouraging, but it shows the strengths of the anglers who know how to adapt to changing conditions to still find quality fish. There wasn’t very much muddy water to contend with as many expected after the constant rains.
Congrats to Robert Huff and Tommy Huff who took 1st place with 11.34 lbs and 2nd place Big Fish at 1.89 lbs. They fished the Richland Creek part of the lake moving around a lot to find active fish. They spider rigged minnows and Jiffy Jigs while watching water temps. They targeted humps in the warmer waters. They didn’t have many bites, but they ones that did were quality fish.
Close behind was John Hall and David Foster in 2nd place with 11.15 lbs. They spider rigged with corks baited with SugarBug’s and minnows very slowly along the creek channel in Lick Creek. They missed a lot of bites during the day, but managed to land some great fish. They also paid close attention to water temps that had changed almost 6 degrees in 24 hours due to the sunshine and stained water.
3rd place was Randy Temples and Ricky Burgamy with 8.18 lbs. They were the last team to have 7 fish to weigh-in! They fished the upper end of the Richland Creek arm of the lake. Big Fish was a 2.12 lbs slab caught by Robert Sellers and Tommy Sellers who also took 4th place with only 5 fish to weigh in at 7.37 lbs!
Glad to see some new teams and appreciate the folks coming out to watch and learn too. Hope you noticed that awesome red Dodge in the photos. The Eco Diesel engine is something you need to see for yourself. Stop in at Five Star Dodge in Warner Robins and ask for Randy Burkey. Tell him Georgia Slab Masters sent you for a great deal.
Check back often and get ready for Blackshear on March 14th out of Leroy's One Stop Bait and Tackle.
